I'd say I use a meditative response which is actually not a distraction. This basically involves actually putting *more* focus not less on the angry words (blame, criticism etc.) that might be passing through my mind, in order to allow the valuable message of those words to come through.

Practically speaking this means that if I'm think something like "My boss is being totally unreasonable" I automatically drop the question "HOW DO I FEEL?" into my mind. And I mean it quite literally - how am I feeling in my body (tight chest, churning stomach etc.), and what might I call the feeling (frustrated, angry etc.). In this way I'm effectively applying a meditation-like level of focus to the actual experience that *I* am having in the moment.

Continuing the process I'll ask myself "WHAT NEED OF MINE IS UNMET THAT LEADS TO THIS FEELING." I'm keeping the focus on myself at this moment. I'm not asking "What is my boss doing to make me feel this way," but rather what need of *mine* is unmet e.g. the need for respect, or predictability, or consideration. This leads to a level of self-connection that contributes to calmness, and higher likelihood of a response that will lead to an outcome I enjoy.
